If you think only women get Botox, think again. More men than ever are getting botulinum toxin injections (known by their brand names as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin).

The numbers don’t lie. The so-called “Brotox” revolution is here.

Over the past decade or so, the number of American men getting Botox injections has risen a staggering 258 percent, according to a new study in Cosmetic Dermatology.

This explosive growth continues at a rapid pace–in the past three years alone, men have received over one million botulinum toxin treatments.

Why are more men choosing Botox?

A competitive edge in the workplace

An attractive, youthful appearance is seen as an asset in the workplace. Maintaining a youthful look can allow men to generate more revenue than their older-looking peers. Many men who have tried Botox believe it gives them a competitive edge in a highly competitive job market and feel it can be helpful in finding a new job, especially in a leaner workforce.

It’s hardly surprising then, that men feel pressured to maintain a more youthful appearance or want to seek the advantage it can provide.  Botox offers men a quick and easy way to achieve this competitive edge, and also just plain feel better and more confident in themselves.

And, of course, look better in social media pics—LinkedIn, Instagram, online dating profiles, etc. (because, hey, it’s just the way of the world these days).

Men want to look good, too

As a man, taking care in your appearance and wanting to proactively maintain a healthier, more vibrant, attractive look is…normal.  Men are becoming more open about addressing appearance-related concerns. There’s no longer that stigma that had been associated with cosmetic procedures in the past. Yes, men get Botox, too. It’s perfectly acceptable. It’s not even uncommon.  You don’t have to wear a disguise to your appointment.

So how does it work?

It’s a quick, ten minute procedure to make lines and wrinkles look better.

Botox and other botulinum toxin injections work by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles, minimizing the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

During the treatment, a topical numbing gel is applied before an average of 6 to 8 injections are administered into the underlying facial muscles. It’s virtually painless.

You’ll typically begin to see results within 24 to 48 hours. Results generally last anywhere from around 4 to 6 months, but may vary by individual.

What to expect

Results are subtle and natural—you’ll still look like you, only with less noticeable lines.

When administered by someone who is licensed and qualified, people shouldn’t be able to tell you’ve had anything done—just that you’re looking good. It won’t feminize your appearance and you can put to rest any fear of that frozen, “I can only make one expression ” look (unless that’s your thing…).
