Eyelid surgery, also known as an eye lift or a blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that removes bagginess from your lower eyelids and excess sagging and wrinkles from your upper eyelids. The surgery can also be combined with other procedures such as a forehead lift and Botox injections.

As you age, the skin on your eyelids will eventually sag, causing bulges and stretching on your eyelids. Eyelid surgery will enhance your appearance, tighten the excess skin and sagging muscle tissue, remove and reposition excess fat, and help give you an overall more vibrant and alert look.

Types of Eyelid Surgery Techniques

There are several techniques used to perform eyelid surgery, and the one used depends on your needs and your desired look. Be sure to consult with your surgeon thoroughly to determine the best procedure for you.

Upper Blepharoplasty: During this procedure, a very small incision is made in the natural crease between the upper eyelid and the region below the eyebrow; this ensures that any post-surgical marks are camouflages. Excess sagging muscle tissue is the tightened, and excess skin is removed. Finally, the incisions are carefully closed with fine sutures.

Traditional Lower Blepharoplasty (Transcutaneous): Your surgeon will make a small incision right below your lash line. Excess skin will be removed, and excess fat will be removed or repositioned for a flatter lower lid. Finally, the incision is closed with sutures.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty: A tiny incision is made inside your lower eyelid during this method. The excess fat is removed and/or repositioned, and then the incision is closed. The advantages of this surgery include no visible post-surgical marks and a low chance of lid pull-down. This procedure is most popular with younger people who specifically have excess fat in this region, since the surgery will not remove sagging skin.

Good Candidates for Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty should be considered by those who have droopy eyelids that adversely affect one’s appearance. It is also a great option for those who experience vision disruptions caused by the saggy skin that droops downward. People over 35 are ideal for this procedure.

Be sure to consult with your doctor before your surgery. During this consultation, it will be necessary to discuss your aesthetic goals, complete medical history, any allergies you may have, and any medications you are currently taking. At this time, you will be able to look at before-and-after photos and can ask any questions you may have.

Your surgeon will walk you through the details of the blepharoplasty procedure, including the preparation and aftercare processes.

Set realistic goals in mind. Be aware that the surgery will cause changes in your appearance, especially if you have had drooping eyelids for years.
